Visual Metaphor: Gathering Storm, by Photographer Michelle de Rose

For over a hundred years poppies have symbolized war, survival and rebirth. Poppies, after all, were the only flowers to grow on battlefields during the first world war. That’s what drew us to this editorial by Romanian fashion photographer Michelle de Rose, featuring model Dina Toma. The eerie wind-swept quality of the photos, combined with the prevalence of death’s flowers, and the model’s sleepy expression, captures something of Heather Burns’ poem, Riding the Wind: “My mind wandered aimlessly to another place and time far away in the distance heard the wind gathering rhymes. The miracle of the wind called me as it galloped through the meadows come my darling stay with me lets ride the wind together.”
