Creative lens on a crowded planet

Seven billion people live on our planet (we’re three billion away from maximum capacity). For some of us that sounds kind of cozy…for others, it’s a little claustrophobic. Have you ever tried, I mean really tried, to find a solitary space? Somewhere with no people, and where the sound of car engines and crying babies are but a memory. How far did you have to go? Perhaps you’ve hiked the rockies, or sailed to a deserted island, if that’s the case, you’re one of the lucky few. Most of us can’t afford the escape into these solitary paradises. That’s what Massimo Vitali‘s series of incredible large-scale photographs reminds us – just how rare solitude can be. His images are at once comforting and stark depending on how you look at them. “You’re never alone” can either be a relief, or stifling (just read it in a creepy dracula voice). Either way, it’s hard to look at the images and not feel something. And that’s an incredible accomplishment for any photographer.
